So this week saw the 10th episode of my new podcast The Guest List with Patrick Hicks and it has been a really fun experience so far. This is a concept that my wife and I came up with over a year ago and it is so cool to see it finally realized.
We had a vision for the format, the questions, the types of guests, what all the playlists would look like on Spotify… and now it’s real.
So why did it take a year to come out? Well there’s this John Mulaney quote I think about a lot, from his special New in Town - it is so much easier not to do things than to do them. There’s always a million reasons not to do creative things. Is it going to be good enough? Is it the perfect idea or is there a better one I just haven’t thought of yet? Will anybody watch or listen to it?
That kind of paralyzed me for awhile. We were inspired by shows like Hot Ones and Chicken Shop Date. Shows with professional cameras that shoot in person on sets, that had crews and money. We didn’t have any of that. We also have full time jobs and two kids and most of the free time I have goes into making music stories. It was a lot easier to not throw a podcast on top of everything.
But we kept thinking about the idea. Every time we saw a celebrity we would think - I wonder what kind of music they listen to. What’s on Tom Hanks’ work out playlist? What songs did Michelle Obama put on a mixtape back in the day? We kept thinking if somebody else made this show we would listen to it. And since in that year of thinking nobody else did, we thought let’s just make it ourselves.
From these first ten episodes we’ve already learned a lot. We learned that by asking people about the music they like they will tell the most amazing stories about their lives. We learned that answering these ten questions we came up with is like a musical fingerprint; nobody on Earth would have the same combination of songs on their Guest List playlist. And we learned that if you film at home and you have a cat she will jump on your chair in almost every interview.
We want to keep learning and keep growing this new project. It is a lot harder than not doing it, but it’s a lot more rewarding. Thank you so much for being with us since the beginning. If you haven’t already please rate and review the show, it would be a huge help.

I found it difficult to choose one tbh however what I did enjoy was listening to the tracks I didn't know of plus relistening to those I'd forgotten eg The Boxer
it's funny, i wouldn't choose my playlist because i wasn't building a playlist when i was answering the questions... which is totally fine, it's cool to see what came out! but as a playlist it doesn't work at all.
