Not many people can say they have a Grammy Award and a Purple Heart from the United States military. Wil Anspach’s story is one of a kind that way. From doing three tours of duty as a United States Marine to working on some of the most important albums of the 2010s and 2020s. But his story is also a universal one.
He was someone who was lost until he found his place in the music business. He was told a million times that music wasn’t a real career and that he wouldn’t make it. He hit rock bottom over and over and then just when he was at his lowest he had his biggest success.
In this interview I talk with Wil about growing up in Pennsylvania, his time in the military, then his career as a musician and an engineer. He tells stories about working with everyone from Zach de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine to Frank Ocean to Jon Batista, about working on the Moana soundtrack, and of course about how he got the nickname Greazy Wil.
