Every Grammys Ever

Episode 1 - the Origins of the Grammys

I’m very excited today to unveil a new project I’ve been working on. A couple weeks ago I was trying to do some research on the first Grammy awards. And I realized that I would love it if there was a series that recapped all the different years of the Grammys. I couldn’t find that that existed… so I decided I had to make it myself.

At first I thought maybe I wasn’t the best person to do this because I don’t actually like the Grammys very much. I grew up with my favorite artists like Sinead O’Connor and Pearl Jam talking about how the Grammys were meaningless and basically were just a popularity contest for who sold the most records.

So then I thought, maybe I’m the perfect person to do this project. Because I wanted to figure out what happened. Early on in Grammy history Frank Sinatra gave a beautiful speech about how the Grammys aren’t about selling records - “you get bread for that” he said, “this is for contributions to the art of recording.” So where did things go wrong?

In order to solve the mystery I am recapping every single Grammys ever. From 1959 to 2024. I’ll be posting one episode every Tuesday through Friday from now until the 2025 Grammys in February of next year. Maybe I’ll even get to attend the show after this is all over.

Today I’m posting two episodes, this one is an intro to the series and a history of how the awards began, the next episode will be the first show.

I hope you enjoy coming along on this journey with me!
